Wall & Floor Preparation
Walls and floors can be properly prepared in a number of ways, from full moratrbed to backerboard with LM and anti-fracture protection. The best method depends on the tile being used and the wall thickness required.
Full mortarbed preparation allows for the truing up of out-of-level or out-of-square surfaces, but require a thicker build up than backerboard installations. Mortabed installations are recommended when installing small tile mosaics to ensure the flatest possible substrate. Moratbed installations are typically 1/2" - 3/4" thick, plus the thickness of the tile and thinset.
Backerboard, typically Hardibacker or DurRock, is particularly well suited when minimal buildups are desired. Since backerboard can be used in lieu of the gyp board layer, it is also a convenient solution when flush or "tile thick" details are required. Backerboard installations can be from 1/4" - 1/2" thick, plus the thickness of the tile and thinset.
